SUSTAINABILITY & ECO-TOURISM
We believe in leading the way for eco-hotels and sustainability in the Azores. We are carefully restoring the estate, respecting its history and breathing new life into each building. Our eco-initiatives include a complete ban on single-use plastic and pesticides. We are the first in the Azores to commit to being a zero food waste business upon opening the hotel. In the gardens we have 2 dedicated wildlife ponds for frogs and local birds. Our chickens are all free range, and our field is maintained with wildflowers, cut in stages only twice a year encouraging wildflowers for pollinators and other wildlife.
The Solar Branco Eco Estate through our in-house brand Baleia Gin is working to support the creation of São Miguel and the Azores as an internationally recognised Whale Heritage Site.
We have accreditation and membership of key sustainable organisations, including The Trillion Tree Project, SGTC, Plastic Pollution Coalition, 1T.org (United Nations) and Earth Check (pending). Read more on our commitment to sustainability and eco-tourism here.
The island of São Miguel is a beautiful, wild paradise in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, and we are 100% committed to helping it remain so. The Solar Branco Eco Estate and Eco Experiences Company works tirelessly to protect and promote the people, animals and products the island has to offer guests.
The Azores is a heaven for wildlife, but the over-use of agriculture and pesticides threatens this status. The Solar Branco Eco Estate is committed to protecting and helping native wildlife thrive here on the grounds. We have committed that 20% of the grounds will be left wild with native plants to encourage bees and other beneficial insects. We are planting over 10,000 new trees and plants to help with this effort. The grounds have 4 dedicated wildlife ponds for frogs and local birds. Our chickens are all free range, and our field is maintained with wildflowers, only cut twice a year, encouraging wildflowers for pollinators and other wildlife.
The Solar Branco Eco Estate hosts a number of community-based events on the grounds. Proceeds generated from the ex-pats in Azores drinks monthly drinks are donated to the Children’s home based in Ponta Delgada. In 2019/2020 over €800 were raised. In addition, a number of other events are hosted on the estate such as our garden plant swap.
The Solar Branco Eco Estate and the Eco Experiences we run are committed to using local products and working with local producers as part of our sustainability commitments. From using only local produce in our vegan cozido dinner, to our work with Rocha Negra, the local gin distillery, we aim to showcase the Azores and its producers.
