May 2022

May in the Azores brings some better weather and sunshine. It is time to plant up the banana trees and cut the grass which has already flowered with beautiful clover and other wild flowers. The end of the month has brought us some unexpected heavy rain and fog. More time to be indoors, but at least the banana trees will be watered in.

News on the Estate: Another hedgehog arrived to the estate to be re-homed. The new speakeasy bar space is taking shape and The Gin Library is almost fully booked over the week-end, it is great to have guests from around the world coming again. Restoration work continues on our buildings, and the ruin is really starting to become a house once again, after almost 100 years. Our third wildlife pond has been completed, and we now await the frogs to move in.

What’s growing? Bananas! after 3 years we have our first bunches coming through and what a delight they are. Onions, cabbages and carrots are growing well and they should be ready soon.

Next month we look forward to more gin! We have guests booked in from the USA who are coming bearing new gins. The Gin Library is getting busy and Baleia is flying off the shelves so we’ll be kept busy as the sunny days get longer and the sun sets later over the green hills opposite to the ocean beyond.
